Making the Most of Your Mantra
Proof that saying your morning mantra out loud is more beneficial than just thinking it. Here are three studies that back up the evidence.
1. The "Saying It Out Loud" Advantage
Study: Perry et al. (2023), Journal of Religion and Health Sample Size: 34 adults (randomized controlled trial)
Key Findings: This study directly compared the effects of "vocal" chanting versus "silent" chanting. While both methods lowered cortisol (stress hormone) levels, the participants who vocalized their mantra experienced a significantly greater reduction in self-reported anxiety compared to those who did it silently.
Statistical Significance: Vocal chanting showed a superior reduction in anxiety scores ($p < .05$).
Takeaway: Vocalizing isn't just "woo-woo"; it creates a physical vibration and auditory feedback loop that silent thought does not, leading to a more profound drop in anxiety.
Did You Know? 🧠
Research shows that saying your mantra out loud beats thinking it silently when it comes to crushing anxiety! A 2023 study found that while both methods lower stress hormones, using your voice creates a stronger "anxiety-relief" effect in the brain. #ScienceOfSound
2. The Power of "Intentional Emotion"
Study: Wang et al. (2025), American Psychologist (Meta-Analysis)
Sample Size: 17,748 participants across 129 studies
Key Findings: This massive meta-analysis confirmed that self-affirmations—specifically those where individuals reflect on core values (emotional intent)—significantly boost general well-being, self-perception, and social connection. The study highlights that these benefits are "long-lasting," persisting weeks after the intervention.
Statistical Significance: Significant positive effect size on general well-being (Effect Size = 0.29, $p < .001$).
Takeaway: Rote repetition isn't enough. The "intentional emotion" component (connecting the words to what you value) is what activates the brain's reward centers (ventromedial prefrontal cortex), turning a phrase into a psychological buffer against stress.
Did You Know? ❤️
Your brain knows when you mean it! A massive 2025 analysis of over 17,000 people proves that affirmations work best when charged with intentional emotion. Connecting your words to your core values activates specific reward centers in the brain that rote repetition misses completely. #MindsetMatters
3. The Physiology of Rhythm (Why the "Chant" Matters)
Study: Bernardi et al. (2001), British Medical Journal Sample Size: 23 healthy adults
Key Findings: This famous study found that reciting a mantra (or prayer) out loud at a specific rhythm (approx. 6 times per minute) synchronized the participants' cardiovascular rhythms. It significantly increased baroreflex sensitivity (a marker of heart health and stress resilience) and regulated breathing patterns more effectively than free conversation.
Statistical Significance: Significant increase in arterial baroreflex sensitivity ($p < .05$).
Takeaway: The rhythmic nature of a spoken mantra physically "hacks" your nervous system, forcing your heart rate and breath to synchronize into a state of coherence and calm.
Did You Know? 🫀
Your heart beats to the rhythm of your voice! Research published in the British Medical Journal reveals that rhythmic recitation synchronizes your breathing and heart rate, physically forcing your nervous system into a state of calm. It’s not magic; it’s biology. #Breathwork
WHAT TO DO NOW:
Add emotion and volume to your morning mantra. It matters!
Healthy as a Cat
Redesign your living space to influence movement. Cats use our furniture as a playground. What if we used a playground as our furniture?
Have you ever seen cats run around the house cutting 90 degree corners and jumping 5 times their height? They don’t go to sports performance coaches or personal trainers to learn this. These actions are instinctual to them. Their owners do not have to teach them how to climb a kitty tower or to perch on the back of a recliner. Cats nap, stretch, eat, play and repeat on their own.
We’ve all seen kitty towers like this.
Cats environments dictate their health.
As do human environments dictate our health.
Why are you reading about cats right now? Because they are a great example for humans. If we set up our homes to have relaxing furniture and huge televisions with superb surround sound, we may not move for hours on end. Imagine the opposite: large wooden boxes to climb over and under, cargo nets or hammocks that are constantly moving and even mini trampolines invite movement into our homes.
Conservative people are thinking about the safety issues right now. Yes, this type of home set up would involve more injuries over time. But, those people that do get injured playing on this type of equipment would be strong and versatile to bounce back quicker because they are more fit from using the equipment in the first place. This safety argument comes down to quality or quantity of years to live.
If you want to start being as healthy as a cat right now, try this. Make things more inconvenient for yourself at home. For strength, you can put your mattress on the ground and get rid of the frame. This will encourage you to use more muscles getting down and back up over the longterm. For flexibility, place targets around the house that you have to touch each time you pass. Some can be low and some can be overhead. For balance, have a piece of foam next to your sinks to stand on while doing dishes or brushing your teeth.
The purpose of this blog post is to encourage readers to make movement more instinctual in their homes. By switching traditional furniture for human-type cat towers, we could have less doctors visits, live more exciting lives and even have more energy for other things. Make your environment dictate your health level.
A Healthy Living Room Makes Movement Instinctual
Rebranding products that are already on the market could result in a new way that people stay fit. I like to call it instinctual movement. If the right product is in the right spot, you have no choice but to use it and get healthier.
Traditional living rooms showcase stationary furniture. This was fine when most people came home from working labor jobs in the fields and at factories. Modern jobs involve sitting at a desk for many hours. The original fix was health and fitness gyms about 5-15 minutes away from home. It is time for a more convenient and modern solution to being physically and mentally fit.
Without needing a Kinesiology degree, by simply switching out traditional furniture in our homes, anyone can become healthier. Take, for example, a swing that hangs from the ceiling. It should be common knowledge that leaning forward and backward, pumping your legs up and down while gripping the support ropes will burn more calories than sitting still on a couch.
What if we stacked and offset two couches so you had to climb up one couch to get to the second couch? There is strength, balance and coordination involved in climbing to a second level even if you are just going to sit up there. But, add rings to the ceiling above you and it can make for more strength gains or even just reaction time drills by hitting the rings like a cat toy.
Say you need more stimulation than this. By turning a trampoline 45 degrees, you can toss a tennis ball at it and the physics will rebound the ball right back to you. Instant hand-eye coordination and more calories burned! Don’t forget about your feet, either. Installing a piece of finished wood onto a wall creates a good rebounding surface for a soccer ball.
Flexibility is an important aspect of fitness but often forgotten about. With stall bars on your wall (think wide monkey bars that go vertical), it’s hard to walk by without reaching up to the top for a little cat stretch. Many stretches can be done with stall bars especially while you are talking on your handsfree device or streaming online. Flexibility is very important for injury prevention.
Your base of support are your feet. Much of our time is spent on flat surfaces which does not challenge our feet to stay strong and flexible. With cobblestone floors (companies make artificial mats) to walk on, we can maintain independence and continue our health journey much longer. This is the ultimate goal in redesigning our living space. You do not stop moving because you are old, you get old because. you stop moving.
A good marketing plan can sell this healthy living room to residential homes, commercial buildings, retirement communities and even resorts. Lets work this together and change the way humans stay active in 2025.
Learn the Concept of Recess for Wellness
Real Recess can help anyone understand what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. There is a workbook available to learn one concept each week for 9 weeks or jump right in with a daily schedule. The overall concept of Real Recess Wellness is to breaks for your health.
We often go back to elementary school when we hear someone talk about recess, right?
The concept of Real Recess Wellness is still an active break in your day, just for adult life.
There have been many books written about small “fitness snacks” that add up to an active lifestyle. Real Recess Wellness puts those breaks into routines making it easier to develop habits. Once these routines turn into habits, it’s like second nature and individuals can modify them to fit their personality. Let’s give some examples:
Say you have trouble getting out of bed in the morning. Real Recess Wellness addresses that in three ways. First, we have the “Evening Wind-Down” routine that starts one hour before getting into bed and preps your mind and body for a full night’s rest. Then, we have the “Wake-Up” Routine that starts before you even open your eyes to prime you for the day. If that is not enough, there is a practice once a week to modify your 1 year, monthly and daily goals which is posted on your bathroom mirror (or somewhere similar).
Another example of a Real Recess routine turning into a habit is performing one of three Real Recess Staple Movements for at least 30 seconds for every 30 minutes of inactivity. This keeps metabolism firing, mobility in joints and cardiovascular circulation.
That is a brief overview of the concepts of Real Recess Wellness. Depending on your personality, you can follow the website here and jump right into the daily schedule. Or, if you are just getting started with healthy wellbeing, download this free 9-week Lifestyle Modification workbook and learn one small step each week.
The next step after turning these routines into habits is to start changing your living environment whether it is home or office. It might sound extreme but adding objects to climb over or crouch under will burn even more calories, keep you flexible and strong. Imagine a mini playgound inviting you to move throughout your day.
Real Recess Wellness is a free website for anyone to learn about leading a healthier lifestyle. When you become healthier, you become free. There are less health complications to worry about, medications could start to decrease and this all lowers your overall stress levels. Join the 2024 Real Recess Wellness New Year Challenge for you and become healthier and healthier one break at a time.
4 More Events to Look Forward To
Look forward to these quarterly events that will bring deep meaningful experience to your life that you can share with family and friends. They can be home or away and free or elaborate. Give one or more a try.
Below are four REMOTE WELLNESS EVENTS TO MOTIVATE LIVING A FULL LIFE AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND COWORKERS. They are events that you can do at home or away and get you looking forward to each quarter.
January - Break a Record
On the second day of each year, break one of your own records. You must plan ahead, be creative and involve any dimension of wellness. Then, announce on social media that you will be breaking this record and why that is important to you. Use hashtag #RecordBreaking
EXAMPLE: This January 2, I will break my own record of walking an indoor 5k before the end of “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd. It reminds me of a friend I lost and reminds me to be amazing.
July - Visit New Water
On the Saturday closest to July 4 (America’s Independence Day), visit a new body of water that you have never experienced. Once you get there, the rest is up to you. Swim, boat, kayak, or try something new. The objective is to provide a freshness to all of your senses. #NewWater
EXAMPLE: Plan a trip to part of a river you have never experienced. Search some apps and read reviews then set off to a safe place to park. Unload your lawn chair and lunch. Enjoy the sights and sounds of water in nature.
March - Travel to Snow
Everyone may not be able to accomplish this one but it is definitely a bucket list item if you enjoy winter. Close to the first Saturday of March, see where the biggest snowstorm is going going to hit near you. Plan your trip and get there before the weather. #WinterStormChase
EXAMPLE: On Monday before the first Saturday in March, check the weather and plan a trip somewhere snow is about to hit. Get snowed in but don’t forget your reading material, good coffee and winter gear.
October - Sleep Outside
Depending which part of the world you are located, bundle (or not) accordingly. On the Saturday closest to mid-October (use your judgement with your college football schedule), sleep under the stars, in a tent or overhead shelter. The purpose is fresh air! #NightAir
EXAMPLE: This can be done in your backyard or porch. Check the temperatures and precipitation then pick your bundleage. Stay out however long you can handle but just think EVERYONE at a point in history HAD to do this.
Wouldn’t it be amazing to meet up with a few of your closest friends a few times a year and complete healthy tasks like this? Imagine everyone’s stories about their results and experiences. Now that is meaningful conversation.
What is Real Recess?
The next step to improving our healthcare system is getting people healthier. But how? Sharing easy to follow wellness practices in their social media where they are already spending time.
Last week I sat in the emergency room on and off for three days with my wife and her father. The nursing staff had to find him a room but 44 patients were in line before him. The hallways were lined with patients. Beside us was a man being sutured up. He shot off his index finder with a pistol that he was cleaning. He should have been there.
On the other side of us was a woman that just laid in a bed for hours until a nurse came over and said, “Okay, you are being discharged”. We have no idea what could have been going on with her. In the room in front of us was a woman with severe anxiety having a panic attack and yelling.
We saw all sorts of ailments over those three days. My point being is that something needs to be fixed and I know where to start!
General health and wellness concepts are not so widely understood. The facts need to be easily accessible and simple to follow. Enter Real Recess.
All along, my plan for creating Real Recess was to make fitness simple and fun for people to do on their own. It has evolved into short wellness practices for people to do on their own. The difference being physical fitness is only one component of wellness.
Scrolling through my free website teaches visitors the basics about health and wellness. I have created videos for people to follow from the comfort of their own homes. I need to be more vigilant in creating daily content so it shows up in social media when people are not even searching for it.
This is where YOU come in. I need your help to send this website to people you care about who need to be healthier. So many of those patients in the hospital would not have been there if they had a simple wellness plan in place. It is as simple as drinking more water and walking a little more each day. But it can get more involved if desired and ready.
Here is my ask: Email, text, DM or tweet this message to your family and friends that you want to see lead a healthier life…
“Hey, I found this helpful website that takes short wellness concepts and has you try them during what they call Recess Breaks. See what you think https://www.realrecess.com/breaks ”
That is all you have to do. It may save their life. But it may also just create more happiness in the world through decreasing stress. There are so many ways to learn and this is just a start.
As a thank you, every download on the website is free. If they want parts of the website saved to their phone or computer for easy access, it’s all free! But how do I benefit?
My ultimate goal is to redesign our living space. From our homes to our offices. By having you share this website with more people, eventually the right person will find my ideas and start to incorporate them into practice. Something needs to change in our healthcare system and it starts with you sharing this free wellness information. Thank you.
